Featured Message: Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
Throughout May, we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) heritage and recognize how their communities’ contributions have enriched America’s history. This year’s AAPI Heritage Month theme is “A Legacy of Leadership and Resilience.”
Here’s how you can learn and celebrate with us.
Learn AAPI Heritage and History
Discover AAPI heritage in our own communities and leaders who leave a legacy of resilience.

Portland, Oregon is home to one of the most authentic Japanese gardens outside of Japan. Inspired in the late 1950s, its purpose was to provide citizens with a serene garden while forging a healing connection to Japan following World War II. The Portland Japanese Garden opened in 1967 and remains a beloved destination for visitors and locals today.

Queen Emma Kaleleonālani Na‘ea Rooke reigned in Hawai‘i in the 1850s. During her and her husband Alexander Liholiho’s reign, the Hawaiian people were rapidly dying from disease. They raised funds to establish Queen’s Hospital, now known as The Queen’s Health Systems. These passionate leaders traveled door to door to fund this hospital, raising over $13,000.
Known as “The People’s Queen,” she was loved for her humanitarian efforts throughout the Hawaiian Islands.

Derald and Stanley Sue are Chinese American brothers who have made significant contributions to healthcare and ethnic minority psychology. Born in Portland, Oregon, they co-founded the Asian American Psychological Association (AAPA).
Their published books and research papers address cultural competence, racial microaggression, multicultural counseling, and the psychology of Asian Americans and other underrepresented groups. The Sue brothers have helped improve the understanding and treatment of ethnic minority groups in healthcare.

Dear Nurses,
As we celebrate Nurses Week, I want to take a moment to thank each of you for the incredible work you do every day.

Striking a Chord in Senior Living: A Story of Music & Life Enrichment

What started as a passion for music therapy has grown into a mission to uplift lives through creativity and connection. Meet Adam Roes, Life Enrichment Director at Gilman Grove assisted living. Now blending music with meaningful programs and serving on Areté Living’s DEIB team, Adam is helping residents live joyful and meaningful retirements.
Adam Roes’ journey in senior care began almost a decade ago, when he was a college student in Northern New York, studying for a bachelor’s degree in music therapy. As a student music therapist, Adam first encountered the profound impact of music on individuals’ well-being when working with seniors, particularly in clinical settings alongside physical therapists and speech and language pathologists.
He was amazed by the progress his clients made, especially those with Parkinson’s disease and aphasia from strokes. The way music helped improve their gait and communication goals was eye-opening, solidifying his belief in the effectiveness of music therapy.
